The "Fed" as it is routinely called works out US monetary principle for the whole country. There was no centered government banking scheme in the US from 1783 to 1913 but that all altered with the Federal Reserve Act of 1913. Ostensibly, it is the centered bank of the US. Don't let the period "Federal Reserve" hurl you -- it is NOT a government US government organisation or department.
